A Fine History Continued

This fine gem in Schiedam dates back to 1750 and is named after the Van Pelt family, the patrician family that once resided in the building. This family, like many in Schiedam at the time, was involved in the gin industry. Mout (malt) is the base ingredient for gin, and the history of Schiedam and the building are closely intertwined. Gin distillers were active throughout Schiedam, with several concentrations of distilleries, particularly on the west side of Lange Haven. In 1749, there were as many as 16 distilleries located here.

A Versatile History

In 1894, the building became property of the Catholic People’s Union. In 1905, it was transformed into Theater De Arcade, where performances and celebrations took place until the 1990s. Many young people from Schiedam visited concerts and danced at The Arcade, with famous artists like Fleetwood Mac and Earth & Fire performing here.

In 1993, the building was demolished to make way for a new apartment complex along Westvest. During the demolition, fascinating murals dating back to 1906, painted by Rotterdam-based decorator Evers, were uncovered. The front part of the building was used as a retail space for the Jawa Sport sports shop, where many hockey sticks were tested as balls were hit down the long corridors. The upper floors were converted into apartments.

A New Destination is Not Without Its Challenges…

Fine Hotels & Suites took ownership of the building in 2017. Together with Burghy, specialists in restoring historic buildings, we began the renovation process. It wasn’t without its challenges. Mushrooms and mold had settled in the building, contractors fell through the damaged floors, and the worst part—a fire and leaks due to severely decayed wood. The restoration took three years, and in the summer of 2018, Stadsvilla Mout finally opened its doors. The city villa exudes history with many original ornaments still intact, including the original doors, which remain as part of the building's decor.
